This is a question I was often asked by my elders when I was young. It often frustrated and scared me a little. The thought of being out on my own, paying my own expenses, owing a car, paying rent at nine or ten years old was not what I wanted to think about. I wanted to play and have fun. As you think about your future career, you’ve probably heard the advice to “follow your passion.” It sounds inspiring, and it’s often given by older adults who want you to avoid the mistakes they feel they made. But before you take this advice to heart, consider that many of these same people may have found themselves in jobs they’re not passionate about—jobs they fell into because of convenience, circumstance, or the pressures of life. Their advice might be more about their regrets than what’s best for you.

Passion is important, but it’s not the only factor that should guide your career choices. Talent—what you’re naturally good at—should be a major part of your decision-making process. The truth is, certain careers that are highly glamorized, like professional sports or entertainment, have incredibly low success rates. Pursuing these paths solely based on passion can lead to frustration if the opportunities don’t pan out.

When you focus on your talents and passion, you’re building on strengths that can set you apart in any field. Your talents are what will allow you to excel, grow, and sustain a career. Passion can wane over time, especially if it’s not backed up by skill and success. But when you leverage your talent, you can find yourself in a career that not only aligns with what you’re good at but also becomes something you’re passionate about.

Older generations might encourage you to follow your passion because they didn’t. But instead of making the same mistake, consider where your talents lie. Find ways to combine those talents with your interests, and you’ll be more likely to build a career that brings you both success and satisfaction.

Remember, it’s not just about chasing what excites you now. It’s about building a future where you can excel, grow, and create a life you’re proud of. Passion is important, but talent is what will carry you forward.
