The Diamond in the Rough

Daily writing prompt
Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.

That one’s easy for me. The most ambitious DIY project I ever took on was the complete rehabilitation of a property I bought with my youngest daughter to help her get into her first home.

The house was a total disaster when we purchased it in 2011 for $187,000. It was so bad that a few professional rehabbers and contractors actually turned the project down. They didn’t want to take it on. Just about everything that could be wrong with a house was wrong. Every major system needed work or outright replacement. The roof was worn out, the heating system was outdated, and the electrical needed upgrading. The windows and exterior doors were inefficient and drafty. The floors were shot. The interior layout didn’t make sense, and both bathrooms and the kitchen had to be completely redone. Even the basement was unfinished and barely usable.

What made the project even more ambitious is that I’m not a contractor or a professional tradesman by profession. We did the work ourselves. Step by step we learned what needed to be done and figured out how to do it right. Instead of hiring crews, it was evenings, weekends, and long days of physical labor.

I set out on what became a full one-year project. This wasn’t cosmetic work — it was a complete rebuild. New systems went in, walls were moved, rooms were redesigned, and everything was brought up to modern standards. There were plenty of moments when it felt overwhelming, but we kept pushing forward.

More important than the project itself was the reason behind it. The goal was to help my daughter get started with her first home, and the house did exactly that. It gave her a foothold at a time when buying a home wasn’t easy for a young person just starting out.

When we finally sold the property in 2024 for $515,000, it felt like closing the book on a long chapter. The numbers tell part of the story, but the real value was in the experience — working together, solving problems, and seeing what determination and hard work can accomplish.

Looking back, it stands as the biggest DIY project I’ve ever taken on — and proof that you don’t have to be a professional tradesman to tackle a professional-level job if you’re willing to learn and put in the work.
