Hard Work: The Force of Nature That Shaped My Life

Daily writing prompt
In what ways does hard work make you feel fulfilled?

“Hard work never killed anyone, but it sure has scared many.”

At 69, when I look back over my life, nearly every blessing I’ve received can be traced back to one thing: hard work. I wasn’t born into privilege. My family was poor, and I grew up battling learning and reading disabilities that made school a constant uphill climb. College was never in the cards for me—my test scores weren’t going to open any doors. But I discovered something that turned out to be even more powerful than a degree: the ability to outwork everyone around me.

I believe that hard work is an actual force of nature. Like gravity, it always pulls something back to you. Sometimes the payoff comes directly from the company or person you serve, other times it comes from an unexpected door opening years down the road. Either way, it never disappears into nothing. It accumulates, like interest in a savings account, and eventually pays dividends.

My career in retail is proof. I started out as a part-time bike builder, hired as nothing more than seasonal help. It wasn’t glamorous work, but I showed up every day determined to do it better, faster, and with more pride than anyone expected. That attitude carried me all the way to becoming one of the youngest Vice Presidents in a Fortune 500 retail chain—without ever having to relocate, something unheard of in that world. I went from tightening bolts on bicycles to sitting at the executive table, and I did it by leaning into the grind when others leaned away.

That same force carried me into antiques. When I opened my own shop, I thought I knew more than I did—but the truth is, I had to start over. There was no internet back then, no quick way to Google a maker’s mark or look up values. I had to dig into reference books, spend long days at auctions, and make plenty of mistakes along the way. Slowly, my persistence built knowledge. That knowledge turned into credibility, and credibility turned into a thriving business. Hard work transformed passion into a livelihood.

Real estate followed the same pattern. No shortcuts, no easy money—just the steady rhythm of doing things right, being fair, keeping properties in good shape, and treating tenants with respect. Over time, the work turned into security, steady income, and investments that still stand strong today.

Here’s what I’ve learned: when a young person shows that kind of work ethic, there’s no limit to how far they can go. Hard work can always put you above the people around you. In fact, I believe the opportunity for success is even greater now than when I was young, because too many young people today aren’t willing to put in the hours or “pay their dues.” Many expect to move into success quickly, skipping the grind that builds resilience and skill. That gap creates an open lane for anyone willing to work harder, stay longer, and push further.

The fulfillment I’ve found in my life isn’t just from what I achieved—it’s from knowing that every step of the way was earned. Hard work gave me a career, gave me independence, gave me the chance to pursue my passions. And the best part is, it’s a lesson available to anyone, no matter where they start.

Hard work has been my gravity, always pulling blessings back into my life. If you’re willing to outwork your peers, you’ll have an advantage they don’t even realize they’ve given away. Trust it, lean into it, and I promise—it will never let you down.
