Moon illusion

Perspective is Everything

“Perspective is everything; what seems large from one angle may be small from another.” I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and the Moon gave me the perfect illustration. You may not believe this, but the Moon looks larger when it is near the horizon compared to when it is high in the sky, even though its actual size and distance from Earth don’t change. This is called the “Moon illusion,” and it happens because our brains perceive objects on the horizon as being farther away. When we see the Moon near trees, buildings, or other landmarks, our brain interprets it as larger to match that perceived distance. When it’s overhead, there are no visual cues for comparison, so it appears smaller. If you measure it with a tool like a caliper, you’ll see it’s the same size in both positions; the difference is purely how our brains interpret the scene.

This phenomenon is not just about astronomy—it’s a lesson for how we view the people in our lives. Often, we judge someone based on the context we see them in, the “landmarks” that surround them. A friend might seem distant or small in one moment, but up close and in the right context, their strengths, wisdom, or kindness can appear monumental. Just as photographers use forced perspective to make objects look bigger or smaller by placing them near items with a known size, we unconsciously exaggerate or diminish the people around us depending on our perspective.

How often do we misjudge someone simply because we are looking from the wrong angle? How often do we let first impressions or a brief encounter define our perception of someone’s character? Like the Moon, people are often much more consistent and substantial than our initial view suggests. Perspective allows us to step back, to shift our angle, and to see the true size and worth of those around us.

So the next time you catch yourself thinking someone is “too small” in your life, or “too distant,” remember the Moon on the horizon. Take a step back. Adjust your perspective. You might just be surprised by how large—or how important—someone really is.
