Lately, I’ve been working on something that doesn’t involve tools, renovations, or eBay sales. I’ve been working on becoming a superhero for strangers. Not the cape-and-mask kind—but the kind who shows up in the ordinary places of life when someone needs help most.
Here is an example of the kind of things I have been up to. Yesterday started like any other errand. I was on a routine trip to the post office, shipping out another eBay sale, when something stopped me in my tracks.
An elderly woman, elegant and dignified, stood frozen by a brand-new Lexus parked just in front of mine. She was perfectly groomed, hair set just right, makeup carefully applied—clearly someone who had lived a life of grace and means. But in that moment, she looked small, lost, and deeply distressed.
As I watched, she tried both doors of the car, then just stood there with an expression I won’t forget—a mix of panic, fear, and quiet defeat. It hit me instantly: she had locked her keys inside.
I couldn’t just drive away. So I asked gently if that’s what had happened. Her trembling “Yes” carried both relief and fear. She didn’t know if she could trust me. And I don’t blame her—in today’s world, an elderly woman alone in a parking lot has every reason to be cautious.
I reassured her, showed her my ID, gave my name, and offered to drive her home for her spare keys. After hesitation and worry, she finally agreed.
The ride started in silence, her body tense, her trust fragile. But then she broke down. Tears filled her eyes as she whispered, “I can’t believe you’re doing this for me. Thank you… thank you so much.”
By the time we reached her home, the fear was gone, replaced with gratitude. She got her keys and told me her neighbor would bring her back. What she didn’t know is that I drove away carrying far more than I had given.
Yes, I helped her solve a problem. But what I gained was a reminder of what it means to be human: to earn trust when someone feels vulnerable, to step in when you could just walk away, and to give simply because you can.
That’s what I’ve been working on lately—trying to be the kind of person who, in small ways, becomes a superhero for complete strangers.
