A lesson from my Father

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is the value of spending time with the young people in your life—your children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, or even the children of friends. It’s easy to get caught up in the pace of our own lives, focused on careers, obligations, or the endless chase of personal gratification. But the moments you dedicate to mentoring, supporting, or simply being present for the young people around you are not just acts of kindness—they are investments in a richer, more meaningful life for yourself as well.
I’ve seen firsthand how much young people benefit from even small acts of guidance or attention. Touch base with them. Ask them about their day. Make time for experiences that create memories. Teach them skills, values, and habits that will serve them long after you’re gone. The truth is, every moment you make special for the youth in your life has a payback—years down the road, you’ll find yourself enriched, wiser, and connected in ways money or success could never provide.
I believe part of the struggle facing today’s youth stems from a generation of parents who were too focused on self-gratification, too absorbed in their own comfort or success to fully invest in their children. But I’m seeing a shift now. Parents are recognizing the importance of guiding, nurturing, and developing their children—not just to help them succeed, but to create a generation that understands empathy, responsibility, and connection.
Spending time with young people isn’t just about shaping their future—it’s about shaping yours. When you invest your presence, your wisdom, and your care, you create bonds that last a lifetime, and you leave a legacy that can never be taken away.
