How have your political views changed over time?

Don’t Pretend You Have One — Or Don’t Care

Some people today love calling themselves “independent.” It sounds noble — like they see the world through their own eyes, not a party’s talking points. But let’s tell the truth: for many, “independent” is just camouflage. You don’t want anyone at the cocktail party or your kids soccer game to know what you believe. You keep it vague enough so you never upset a friend, a coworker, a cousin… or yourself. You get to sit safely on the fence while everyone else takes arrows for what they stand for.

Then there are the Libertarians. They are the smartest people in the room and often the richest They’ve figured out their life — good for them. But the general attitude is: “I’m fine — and if you’re not, that’s your problem.” Government should disappear, taxes should vanish, and if someone hits tough times… well, they should’ve worked harder, right? Freedom for all — as long as everyone can swim.

One hides from judgment.
The other pretends judgment doesn’t exist.

Both avoid the messy part of being a citizen: caring what happens to other people.

If you believe something — anything — have the guts to say it.
If you think policy matters — act like it affects more than your own backyard.

Don’t drape yourself in “independent” like a magic invisibility cloak.
Don’t wear the Libertarian badge like it means you’ve ascended to political enlightenment.

This country works only when enough of us actually stand for something
bigger than ourselves — and care what happens to the people standing next to us.

So here’s the real test:

If you’re going to claim a position, don’t pretend you have one —
or don’t care.
