I keep my mouth shut

Daily writing prompt
You get some great, amazingly fantastic news. What’s the first thing you do?

The first thing I do when I get amazingly fantastic news?

I keep my mouth shut.

Not because I’m not excited… trust me, I’m excited. I’m doing that thing where you read the message ten times just to make sure it’s real. I’m smiling like an idiot. My brain is already jumping ten steps ahead.

But I’ve learned something over the years.

Not everyone in your life truly wants to see you win.

That’s just the truth.

When you’re young, you think good news is something you share with everybody. You assume people will be happy for you because… why wouldn’t they be?

But life teaches you pretty quickly that some people don’t clap when you succeed.

They smile, but it’s a forced smile.

They say “That’s great!” but their eyes don’t match their words.

And you can almost feel them doing mental math in their head like, “Why him? Why not me?”

So the first thing I do is stop and think.

Who in my life is genuinely happy when something good happens to me?

Who roots for me?

Who wants to see me do well, not just “do okay”?

Because those are the only people who deserve to hear it first.

And I’ll tell you something else… sometimes it’s not even about jealousy. Sometimes it’s just bitterness. Some people are so unhappy with their own life that they can’t handle seeing anyone else have a win.

And they’ll drag the moment down with little comments like:

“Yeah, but don’t get too excited.”

“Just be careful.”

“Well, that’s good… for now.”

Or the classic:

“Must be nice.”

Nothing kills good news faster than someone who can’t just let you have the moment.

So I’ve gotten smarter. I’ve gotten more selective.

Now, when something great happens, I tell the people who I know will smile for real.

The people who will say, “That’s awesome!” and actually mean it.

The people who don’t secretly hope it doesn’t work out.

The people who don’t need to compete with you.

The people who don’t get uncomfortable when you’re doing well.

Because here’s the truth:

Good news reveals who’s really in your corner.

It’s easy for people to be around you when things are going wrong. A lot of folks love playing the role of the supporter when you’re down.

But when things go right?

That’s when you find out who’s genuine.

So what’s the first thing I do when I get great news?

I protect it.

I keep it close.

I share it carefully.

Because good news is like a flame… and the wrong people will blow it out.
