The USA is not what you see on TV

Daily writing prompt
What are the biggest mistakes people make when visiting your country?

The biggest mistake people make when visiting the U.S. is thinking it’s all one thing. It’s not. This place is huge, chaotic, and wildly different depending on where you stand. You can drive twenty minutes and feel like you crossed into a different country.

Another mistake? They underestimate the size. Visitors show up with a three‑day itinerary like they’re going to “see America.” Buddy, it takes three hours just to get across some counties. You’re not knocking out New York, the Grand Canyon, and Disney World between breakfast and lunch.

They also assume everything is walkable. Not here. In a lot of places, if you try to walk somewhere, people slow down and ask if your car broke down.

And here’s a big one: They think Americans are rude because we’re direct. Truth is, we just don’t do the slow, polite dance. If you’re in line, order. If you’re driving, go. If you’re blocking the aisle, move. It’s not hostility — it’s efficiency.

But the biggest mistake of all? They expect the U.S. to match whatever version they saw on TV. It won’t. It’s louder, bigger, messier, friendlier, and a whole lot more real than the movies ever show.
