Hammarskjöld died when his plane crashed in what is now Zambia while he was trying to negotiate peace during the Congo Crisis. The official explanation for decades leaned toward pilot error, but suspicions of sabotage never disappeared.
What’s intriguing is that later investigations uncovered testimony and information suggesting the plane may have been attacked or deliberately brought down. The United Nations has continued investigating the case, and questions remain about intelligence held by the United States, Britain, Belgium, South Africa, and others.
The stronger conspiracy theory says Western intelligence services—including possibly the CIA—wanted Hammarskjöld out of the way because his policies threatened Western mining and geopolitical interests in the Congo.
Do I think that’s proven? No. But I think the possibility that his death wasn’t simply an accident is believable.
And unlike Watergate or planned obsolescence, this one remains genuinely unresolved.
