I’ll be honest—until recently, I wasn’t fully sold on AI. I’d heard the hype, but I wasn’t convinced it could really help in a practical, everyday situation.
This morning changed my mind. I woke up and sat up to get out of bed—and immediately, the world started spinning. I felt dizzy, nauseous, and broke out in a cold sweat. I had never experienced anything like it. I didn’t know what was happening to me. My mind raced through the worst possibilities: stroke, heart attack, something life-threatening. Being early on a Saturday morning, getting to a doctor or ER wasn’t an option unless I called an ambulance.
I was completely in the dark—until I grabbed my phone and opened the ChatGPT app. Within minutes, I had a likely explanation: BPPV—Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.
BPPV happens when tiny crystals of calcium carbonate in your inner ear, called otoconia, become dislodged from their normal location and drift into one of the semicircular canals. These canals help your brain sense balance and movement. When the crystals end up where they shouldn’t, they send false signals to your brain, making it feel like the room is spinning—especially when you move your head.
A quick YouTube search showed me the Epley Maneuver—a simple sequence of head and body movements that can be done right in bed. The goal is to guide those crystals back to their proper place using gravity. Carefully following the instructions, I was able to perform the maneuver. Within about 45 minutes, the dizziness eased, and I could finally get out of bed.
I had underestimated AI. In a situation where I literally had no idea what was happening to me, it gave me a fast, reliable explanation. Combined with human knowledge on YouTube, it became an instant lifeline.
Today, I’ve changed my mind. AI isn’t just a flashy tool—it can genuinely help people in frightening, real-world situations. Experiencing that firsthand has completely shifted how I see it.
