I think it is.
None of us likes chaos when we’re living through it, but looking back, many of the toughest times in our lives turned out to be the moments that made us stronger. A little chaos forces us to adapt, think differently, solve problems, and appreciate the calm when it returns.
When I look back on my own life, I can see it. Losing jobs I thought I’d have forever pushed me to start my own business. Owning a retail store through good times and bad taught me lessons I never could have learned in a classroom. Selling my business and figuring out retirement was a whole new chapter that forced me to think differently about money and life. Even my health challenges—back surgery, living with neuropathy, and more recently dealing with painful back spasms—have reminded me not to take the simple things for granted, like being able to walk, work around the house, or spend time with my family.
The key is balance. Too much chaos can wear you down. Too little can make you complacent. Life has a way of throwing us curveballs just when we think we have everything figured out, and maybe that’s not always a bad thing.
Steel isn’t made strong without fire. Muscles don’t grow without resistance. Character doesn’t develop without adversity.
I’m not wishing for chaos. I’d much rather live a peaceful, predictable life. But if I’ve learned anything over nearly seven decades, it’s that some of life’s greatest blessings came disguised as setbacks. The storms I wanted to avoid often taught me the lessons I needed most.
Maybe the goal isn’t to eliminate every bit of chaos from our lives. Maybe it’s to learn how to handle it a little better each time it comes our way.
